Ferrari ME Cup &Ferrari Challenge Asia – Pacific Series in YAS races
Yas Marina Circuit hosted the grand two finales of Yas Racing Series in the weekend as speed and suspense lovers, fans and drivers enjoyed two days of closely-fought action.
Competitions kicked off
Fans were treated to a range of highly competitive races in Round 4, including the final two rounds of the 2016 TRD 86 Cup’s sophomore season; UAE Time Attack, the Ferrari ME Cup and Ferrari Challenge Asia – Pacific Series.
After a phenomenal season and closely fought finale at Yas Marina Circuit, Karim Al Azhari was crowned TRD 86 Cup champion for the second consecutive season after finishing with an impressive total of 220 points.
Mohammed Abdulghaffer Hussein finished as runner up with 192 points, while Ahmed Al Melaihi came in third place with a total of 154 points.
Speaking shortly after his victory, Karim Al Azhari said: “He feels fantastic to win especially on home soil among UAE fans,” adding “It maybe even feels better than last year as I feel like I set the standard for the first time around.”
“So after a difficult start to the season, I am very glad to be standing on the top of the podium, as I felt more confident based on my previous experiences,” Al Azhari added in cheerful voice.
Fun & excitement
Car races sport is featured by constant fun and enthusiasm, because we couldn’t know the winner till the last moments, said Al Azhari adding “I will be very happy when I stand again on the crowning stage wining the first place after crowded season of work and efforts.”
I enjoyed the competitions of TRD 86 Cup, hosted by YAS circuit,“ Al Azhari reiterated adding the organizers have exerted much efforts to bring the race in best shape.
“Everyone does a fantastic job at Yas Marina Circuit to put on the TRD 86 Cup series. The facilities are absolutely amazing and I love racing here. I would like to thank everyone who helps put on such a fantastic event and also a big thank you to Sam Performance for giving me a fantastic car to race every time,” Al Azhari concluded.
Ferrari ME Cup races
In addition to the fierce competitions of TRD 86 Cup, Rounds 3 and 4 of Yas Racing Series saw the return of the Ferrari ME and Ferrari Challenge Asia-Pacific raceswith its unique cars “ galloping horse” designed for the race circuits.
Kantasak Kusiri dominated in the Ferrari Challenge Asia-Pacific, finishing comfortably ahead of Steve Wyatt in second and Florian Merckx in third.
“As we hosted YAS race series in its second season, the races mirrored fun and excitement in all stages, we saw friendly races among the participants for the first time,” said Al-Tariq Al-Ameri, chief executive manager of YAS Marina Circuit.
“The second season of Yas Racing Series has been fantastic. Once again we have seen some great competitive racing, excellent support from our local and international partners and have witnessed some impressive drivers’ development as the season has progressed,” Al-Ameri added.
He reiterated, “On behalf of Yas Marina Circuit, I would like to congratulate all of our winners and we look forward to watching the series grow with an even bigger and more competitive domestic grid next season.”
Fans were also treated to the flat-out excitement of cars and drivers pitted against the clock in the UAE Time Attack.
In the A and B class final heats, Fadi Bikawi was the fastest of the group, posting the quickest lap of 2.24.966 followed by Ashan Silva (2.30.604) with Khaled Al Qubaisi clocking an impressive 2.33.520 to place third.
In the final heats of classes C and D Abdulaziz Al Yaeesh posted the quickest lap of 2.38.980. Finishing in second and third were Marwan Alrahmani and Abdulla Ahmed Ali with times of 2.39.216 and 2.41.760 respectively.
